Seamer Bowling Club weekly report 3rd August

Congratulations first to Margaret Hill, Edrene Rumley and Jim Dawson who won the South Cliff BC Whistlestop. This is the second whistlestop they have won this season the other being at Thornton Dale earlier this summer.

Jim has advanced to the club’s Men’s Singles Semi finals with a nail biting win over Melvyn Riley. At 17-18 down he played a weighted shot to take out Melvyn’s shot bowl to score a full house and win 21-18. In the semi final he meets Peter Lees in a repeat of the 2023 final.

On Tuesday our Vets side produced arguably their best performance of the season to beat League table toppers Sleights Red 8-0. All three rinks won and as a result we are now level on points at the top of the league with Sleights with two games to play. What a fantastic effort by the whole side.

The Open League side consolidated their top three position in their league with a 6-2 victory away over Filey by 51 shots to 42. John Rokes, Edrene Rumley and skip Denise Everson’s 27-11 win being the major contribution in a fine win.

Thursday saw our Aussie Pairs side lose their first game of the season away at Burniston by one shot! Even so their points count means they are League Champions with one game still to play. Well done. An excellent achievement by all who played this season.

Our Independent League side, currently heading Division Two, played Hutton Cranswick B at Hutton on Friday winning on two rinks and drawing the third. Peter Lees, Margaret Hill and skip Dave Bond won 24-9 in a 7-1 victory.

Heather Standring beat Denise Everson and now plays Margaret Hill in the Ladies Singles Final.

On Saturday Denise and Derek Everson with Jean Smith came second in the Kirkbymoorside Triples Whistlestop winning three and drawing the other two of their games. Denise also won the spider to cap off a successful afternoon.

Sunday saw us welcome Welham Bowling Club in a friendly that turned out to be a thriller unnoticed it seemed by all but one person. On a hot afternoon the game was evenly balanced with one of Seamer’s rinks winning comfortably as was one of Welham’s. The third rink saw Welham eat into Seamer’s lead and that meant an extremely close finish. With the two other rinks finished and the third with one end to play Seamer held a two shot advantage overall. The Welham number 2 then drove the jack right to the edge of the ditch. As a result Seamer were 2 may be 3 shots down and in danger of losing the match. With the very last wood of the game skip Peter Lees, who seemed to be the only person aware of the situation, coolly drew second wood ensuring we won by one shot overall, then shook hands with the opposition triple and presented each of them with a small token in appreciation of a game played in such a friendly and competitive spirit.

This coming Sunday 10th is our annual whistlestop when 24 teams play throughout the day for the Harry Webster Shield and a share of the £200 prize money donated by our sponsor Wilson’s Food Hall. Food is available all day at very reasonable prices. We have a giant tombola, a raffle and a hundred squares board with a £50 note prize as well as two "spider" competitions bowling to a centred jack. All the food and most of the prizes are donated by our members. We also thank the many local companies who have kindly contributed a variety of prizes to the event.  Spectators are welcome to come, and try their luck on the stalls, partake in refreshments and watch some very friendly but competitive bowling at any time during the day from 10am to late afternoon. Entry is free to this the most popular whistlestop event in the area.
